What is agroforestry? What are the benefits of agroforestry elements in the landscape? What does agroforestry provide?
What is agroforestry?
Agroforestry is actually a traditional, newly rediscovered specific land-use system based on the cultivation of tree species together with plant and animal agricultural production on the same soil - animals (poultry, pigs), crops (potatoes, grain) or valuable deciduous trees (cherry, beech, butternut). The management of the landscape and agricultural land, thus its economic use, protection of natural components and the landscape as a whole, must be based on the principle of sustainable agricultural management.
What are the benefits of agroforestry elements in the landscape?
Spinneys, alleys, orchards or windbreaks contribute to balancing climatic extremes and their impacts on the agricultural landscape - trees create a specific microclimate, cool the landscape, improve its aesthetics, sustainability and last but not least, contribute to water and soil retention. Agroforestry elements bring farmers not only increased production, ecological and economic balance, but also maintain the traditional direction of management of the given enterprise. Non-productive functions are eg food for animals, insects, bees, a higher aesthetic element in the landscape at the time of flowering, biodiversity, a shelter for animals, etc.
What does agroforestry provide?
Due to the industrial character of agricultural production, agroforestry elements offer solutions to reconcile the ecological, economic and cultural aspects of farming, regardless of the size of the farm. Agroforestry enhances the quality of the environment and agricultural landscape promotes biodiversity and ensures carbon sequestration in the soil - an effective tool to combat climate change, as called for by the new EU Common Agricultural Policy since 2021.

About project AGFOSY

AGFOSY is Erasmus+ project of strategic partnership and is EU funded. Seven partners from six countries are working together to raise awareness and promote agroforestry measures across Europe. The project began in 2018 and will run for 24 months. The aim of the AGFOSY project is to create a complex yet flexible training system relating to agroforestry. It will be based on case studies and best practices that will provide farmers and landowners with the skills, knowledge and competencies to implement agroforestry systems on their own farms.
